Parkes is most famous for the 'Parkes Observatory' or what is more popularly known
as the dish.
'The Dish' is a film about the first landing on the moon in 1969 and the role that the 'Parkes Observatory' played in relaying the images from Apollo to a television audience of around 2 billion people. The film received critical acclaim from domestic and international audiences . Major attractions: Goobang National Park Being a new National Park, visitor facilities are in the process of being established. Visitors are welcome to undertake passive recreation activities such as bushwalking, bird watching and camping. More than 300 plant species have been recorded in the park, including 40 species of orchids. Brochures are available from the Visitor Information Centres in Peak Hill and Parkes. Western Plains Zoo Situated about an hour north of Parkes on the Newell Highway, world famous zoo for its captive breeding programs, attracts thousands of visitors each year. For more information: www.zoo.nsw.gov.au Peak Hill Gold Mine Situated half an hour north of Parkes on the Newell Highway, Several walking paths have been constructed with guided tours daily at 8.30am, 10.00am, 2.30pm and 4.00pm and self guided tours between 8.00am to 4.30pm seven days a week.
